BACKGROUND

Send a request for information to local health officials about progress made in addressing the local needs surrounding FASD if you haven’t  yet done so. There would be a huge impact if everyone contact their local Health Official requesting information as it raise their awareness of how many local families are affected.

In 2022, the National Institute of Health & Care & Excellence launched the Quality Standard for FASD (NICE QS 204). This is based on work that was already started in Scotland. Part of the Quality Standard is that every Integrated Care System and Health Board in England & Wales will report annually on the progress that is being made in identifying and addressing the local needs. An easy read version of the Quality Standard can be found here

In a recent reply to a request for support for a young person already diagnosed with FASD one English CAMHs service wrote “We are aware of the recent NICE Quality Standard for FASD. we have highlighted the gap in the service and shared the quality standard with commissioners of our service so that a local pathway is commissioned for assessment and management of children with possible FASD.” It seems appropriate to add weight to that aspiration so that those commissioners are aware of the extent of the need in the local area.

As health is a devolved issue in the UK there are different approaches in the four nations and therefore there are two different approaches.

In Scotland & Northern Ireland we are asking what plans are being made to address FASD at a local level.

In England & Wales we have recently sent Freedom of Information requests specifically to see what progress is being made towards addressing the NICE Quality Standard.  These are summarised in our new report (available as of 9/9/2024) here: Not Commissioned: Systemic Confusion in NHS Services on alcohol, pregnancy and FASD.

In 2022 NICE published its Quality Standard on FASD (QS204). This is based on the SIGN 156 work already developed in Scotland and is applicable in England and Wales.

The Quality Standard recognises the need for improved services for FASD prevention, recognition, diagnosis and support in all Integrated Care Systems and Health Boards.

As a [service user/ local service provider/ practitioner] I would like to inquire what steps you have taken more than two years after the NICE Quality Standard on FASD to improve local services. NICE suggests that it’s important to develop an action or commissioning plan.

A new report from The National Organisation for FASD shows that the majority of NHS ICBs (England) and Trusts (England and Wales) have not taken action.

The report shows that our local area [INSERT – has taken action, has taken partial action, has not taken action, did not reply by the deadline though the response is available. Say whatever you’d like to say about their reply].

Our family’s experience in using local services is [INSERT – tell them what’s worked and what hasn’t worked.]

The National FASD report is available as of 9/9/2024 here: Not Commissioned: Systemic Confusion in NHS Services on alcohol, pregnancy and FASD.

On September 16th, 2022 NICE published its Quality Standard on FASD (QS204). This is based on the SIGN 156 work already developed in Scotland and is applicable in England and Wales.

The Quality Standard recognises the need for improved services for FASD prevention, recognition, diagnosis and support in all Integrated Care Systems and Health Boards.

In England & Wales regional bodies must develop a plan that “should contain a list of actions that show how you will improve the service in-line with a quality statement. Record against each action: a person responsible; a deadline; a way to measure progress.”

As a [service user/ local service provider/practitioner] I would like to know what we are doing in locally to put in place measurable targets as has been done in England and Wales for the prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies and diagnosis and support for those with FASD, including how you are including service users in that process. More information is available here: https://nationalfasd.org.uk/learn-more/practitioners/gps-and-healthcare-professionals/

Many thanks

Who to contact

Please note these details are provided to the best of our knowledge at the time of printing. We have provided where possible the name of the chair of the boards, though they may not be the ones most directly involved in providing FASD services and a reply to you might be from another person. Where possible we give links for the boards – you could always write to all on the board, or to the medical directors, etc. Get creative! And be sure to make your email/ letter/ call positive and personal. Offer to roll up sleeves and meet with them to help improve lives.
