Cutting-edge training courses

We are pleased to offer two training courses that have been developed in partnership with Seashell, as part of a “Resources and Training to Support Children and Young People with FASD” project funded by the Department of Health and Social Care.

  • Supporting Children and Young People with FASD (1 day)
  • Me and My FASD:  A Unique Course for Practitioners Supporting a Young Person to Understand Their FASD Diagnosis (3-day)

They are based on the “Best Practice in FASD Training Guide” and the “FASD: Preferred UK Language Guide” – both also produced as part of the DHSC project, after extensive consultation with experts and those with lived experience.

Externally reviewed

After a rigorous year developing these courses, an external review was conducted. The evaluation by Rachel Flood Associates is available here.

Three-Day Training

Me and My FASD: A Unique Course for Practitioners Supporting a Young Person to Understand Their FASD Diagnosis

This course is for practitioners working with young people with FASD. It introduces the Me and My FASD Toolkit – a range of practical, hands-on materials specially designed for those with FASD. The new www.FASD.me website is central to this.

The course is quality endorsed by OCN (Open College Network). Practitioners who attend the 3-day training will receive our widely acclaimed toolkit (valued at £60) including: The Break it Down Board, Calming Cards, The Misunderstoods: Living FASD board game and other fidget items and materials. They also will have access to supplemental versions of the Me and My FASD Toolkit for direct use with children and young people with FASD. These materials have been called “a game changer.” Participants also will receive complimentary access to National FASD’s “Introduction to FASD” e-learning course, worth £95.

Topics covered include: FASD causes, prevalence, terminology, signs and symptoms, how diagnosis is made. Importantly this course goes where other courses do not, it provides hands-on tools and suggestions for how to use the newly created resources to work with young people with FASD to help them understand their diagnosis and how to learn FASD-informed coping strategies. Seashell and National FASD’s vision is that every CCG and Local Authority have someone attend this course so there can be FASD Allies throughout the country to help with the increased interest that will result following the coming NICE Quality Standard on FASD.

Bespoke events

National FASD also provides bespoke sessions for public and private organisations. We also regularly provide speakers for conferences, trainings and other events. Due to the great number of requests we receive, we must prioritise those events designed for maximum impact and which focus on promoting awareness and a more positive approach to FASD among diverse audiences. These are curtailed at the moment due to COVID.

In addition, for smaller-scale trainings, we can put you in touch with a range of individuals and organisations that provide more localised and regional FASD training.
